Cultural Origin: Anishinabe, Lake St. Martin First Nation

Jackie Traverse is a multi-disciplinary First Nation artist who calls the city of Winnipeg her home. Much of her work contains a combination of popular and traditional cultural reflections, which she represents through her knowledge of urban life, contemporary visual art, traditional crafts and her own cultural practices. She works in several mediums from oil and acrylic painting to mixed media, sculpture and stop-motion animation.

Traverse is well known among artistic communities across Canada. Her paintings, drawings, documentaries and sculptures speak to the diverse realities of being an Aboriginal woman. She created a stop-motion animation about missing and murdered women in Canada, another about the '60s Scoop called "Two Scoop", and "Empty": a tribute to her distant mother. Jackie is deeply touched by the injustices faced by First Nations people. She is committed to her community and teaches art in public schools. Bringing traditional First Nations teachings to diverse cultures.
