These wonderful rain sticks are made from cacti. The hollow cacti are dried in the sun. The thorns are driven into the hollow cactus like nails. The spines are then gathered together and pushed back into the holes on the outside, spine tip first. Pebbles or other small objects are placed inside the rain stick and the ends are sealed. A sound similar to falling rain is made when the rain stick is turned end to end as the tiny objects fall against the thorns. The slower the turn, the quieter the precipitation. These rain sticks are used to bring rain, an essential commodity in the desert southwest of the United States. Wire trim varies.
